Paramount Pictures has officially confirmed Top Gun 3, announcing that Tom Cruise will reprise his iconic role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. The news was revealed during the studio’s CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas, signalling that the high‑flying franchise is far from finished after its recent resurgence.
The third film follows the extraordinary success of Top Gun: Maverick, which landed in cinemas in 2022 and went on to become one of the biggest box office hits of the decade. The sequel drew new audiences while tapping into nostalgia, proving the franchise still had serious altitude left.
Long‑time producer Jerry Bruckheimer is also returning, continuing his involvement with the series that began in 1986. Paramount executives confirmed that work on the script is already underway, although plot details are being kept tightly under wraps for now.
While no release window has been announced, the expectation is that the story will again follow Maverick alongside a new generation of pilots, building on the characters introduced in Maverick. Cruise has previously said he takes years to develop the right story for sequels, suggesting the studio is aiming for quality over speed.
The announcement has sparked immediate excitement among fans, many of whom were surprised by how successfully Top Gun: Maverick balanced legacy characters with fresh faces. With Cruise back in the cockpit and Paramount confident enough to greenlight another sequel, Top Gun 3 is shaping up as one of the most anticipated blockbuster projects currently in development.
