Two showers, one sky show

Stargazers across Australia are in for a celestial treat tonight, as two meteor showers, the Southern Delta Aquariids and the Alpha Capricornids, reach their peak. While both showers began earlier this week, Tuesday 29 July is shaping up to be the best night to catch them in full action.

No binoculars, no telescope, just your eyes and a bit of patience. Bring a blanket, rug up warm, and let your eyes adjust to the darkness. The show is already underway, but tonight’s the real headliner.

When and where to look

The Southern Delta Aquariids are known for fast, faint streaks, producing up to 20 meteors per hour, while the Alpha Capricornids bring slower, brighter fireballs that can light up the entire sky. You don’t need any special equipment. Just step outside around midnight to 2 AM, find a dark spot away from city lights, and look south or southeast.

Don’t miss it

So grab a mate, make a hot choccy, and keep your eyes on the sky. You might even catch a fireball and make a wish while you’re at it!
