Mayor to meet disaster group, sandbags available: Flood watch latest

The mayor of Rockhampton will meet with the region’s disaster group this morning.

It comes as The Bureau issues the warning that the Fitzroy River could see flooding by Monday as waters rise.

Of particular concern are areas in low-lying areas like Depot Hill and parts of Berseker and Park Avenue.

Sandbags are available at four locations around Rockhampton – residents asked to bring their own shovels and bags if possible.

Four locations around Rocky will offer sandbags for residents wanting to protect their property from any potential flooding.

You can find council’s depots at the Gate 8 of the showgrounds, McLeod Park on Dean Street, Opposite the Victoria Tavern on Bridge Street- as well as the Gracemere Pool Car park on Russell Street.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was in Clermont yesterday, where he announced a government package for the flood affected region.

26 million dollars infunding has been allocated by the State and Federal government for flood recovery.

One million dollars directly for the Isaac Region for flood prevention and clean up.

Mr Albanese said “every level of government will be working together in the months ahead”

Rockhampton Regional Council says that waste and recycling collections are continuing as usual – where weather permits.

Some properties may lose access due to localised flooding- but it will come in due time.

Council says if your bin hasn’t been picked up leave it by the kerb and it will be picked up outside of collection time.

Road conditions will continue to be monitored to ensure the service continues.

Boat owners in the Fitzroy are also asked to be on alert.

Owners to take steps now to secure or remove their vessels as more water and debris comes down the river.

Hazards may be created in coming days due to floating debris.

Council wants boaties to check their moorings, make sure equipment is in good conditions and stay alert to changing conditions.
