A 33-year-old Gympie man has been charged over a which fire destroyed a Rockhampton Church.
Emergency services and police were called to the blaze on Park Avenue around 2.00am yesterday.
About seven hours later the 33-year-old was taken into police custody and he’s since been charged with arson.
Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Kevin Mawdsley says he had been a member of the church.
“He might have had some sort of grievance against them, so we believe it was a targeted attack specifically at that church building.
“His motivations behind that are somewhat unclear.
“The building has been completely destroyed by the fire and the owners of the building … being the Oasis church, have indicated that the value of the building is in the vicinity of 3 million dollars.”
The 33-year-old man will face the Rockhampton Magistrates Court today.
