The Bureau of Meteorology’s predicted flood peak in Rockhampton has been lowered to 7.5m on Wednesday, from just below 8 metres.

Moderate flooding is expected to be occurring at Yaamba, while minor flood levels may be exceeded in Rockhampton this morning.

Rockhampton Deputy Mayor Drew Wickerson said they expect about 280 residential properties will be affected.

“That’s not 280 homes, that’s 280 residential properties that may get water into their yard, but if you’re looking at properties with water over the floorboards, there will be a few,” he said.

SES local controller Jasper Humphries said SES crews spent yesterday doorknocking and telling residents in low-lying areas what to expect.

“We’ve also SES out assisting with sandbagging, assisting those communities and those members of the public that can’t assist themsleves, and we have also deployed flood boats in case of an emergency,” he said

Due to flooding associated with the Fitzroy River, Lakes Creek Road is currently closed between Dean Street and Cooper Street.

There are currently 40 road closures, with the full list found on the Rockhampton Disaster Dashboard.

Meanwhile Maritime Safety Queensland has made the decision to close the Fitzroy River and all boat ramps due to the flooding.

Failure to comply with the temporary closure carries a maximum penalty of $33,380 for an individual, or $166,900 for a corporation.

Rockhampton Deputy Mayor Drew Wickerson said it’s too early to say when the floodwaters will subside

“From past experience, a few days and we will start to see it slowly subside – it’s been slow to rise so will probably by slow to subside,” he said.
