The Fitzroy River Barrage gates will open this week to clear aquatic weeds built up after recent rain.
Rockhampton Regional Council will undertake the water release from today and be carried out across several days, raising two or three barrage gates at a time to flush out the weeds.
Water Councillor Edward Oram says it’s important to flush the weed downstream while there is sufficient flow in the river
“The release will be managed by raising two or three barrage gates at a time to increase the velocity which will draw the weed through,” he says.
“The release might take several days and will only occur during daylight hours to allow the released weed to be shifted downstream.”
Council is urging boat owners to remain alert during this period.
“We ask boaters to exercise caution as weeds drift downstream, regularly check moored vessels for weed build-up, and take care when launching,” Cr Oram says.
