A warning to Gladstone locals about the safe use of e-scooters and e-bikes.
Operation Xray Surety began earlier this month and has seen officers engaging with communities across the state to educate users on road rules and compliance associated with e-mobility devices, including e-bikes, e-scooters and e-motorbikes.
Officers from Gladstone’s Child Protection Investigation Unit (CPIU), General Duties, and Highway Patrol have conducted more than 50 street checks around school zones and found around 80% of e-mobility devices to be non-compliant.
A large number of children were also found to not be wearing helmets correctly.
Officer in Charge of Gladstone CPIU, Detective Senior Sergeant Marya Barton, said these patrols carried out under Operation Surety are set up to ensure all road users are educated and protected.
“The high number of non-compliant e-mobility devices tells us that there is a serious lack of understanding around the rules of these devices and the risks involved,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Barton.
“We urge all parents and carers of children to ensure the devices they are using are compliant and safe, and that children know the road rules and are properly wearing compliant helmets.”
“Riders and parents can expect to see police issuing fines and charges for the non-compliant use of e-mobility devices.”
