A man is on the run following an attempted armed robbery at a Berserker service station.

Around 2.40am Tuesday, a man armed with a hammer demanded money from an employee at the Shell Coles Express on Musgrave Street.

The employee retreated to a back-office room and locked the door.

The offender was unable to open the door to the register area and instead attempted to use the hammer to smash an ATM, but was unsuccessful.

Police say he also caused damage to the locked main entry doors and left the scene empty-handed.

The man is described as being Aboriginal in appearance, aged 20 to 25 years old, 165 to 170cm tall, with short black hair and a small moustache.

He was wearing a grey shirt tied over his head, a dark-coloured baseball cap, black jacket, long black pants, white shoes, and a brown backpack.

Police are appealing for witnesses, or anyone with CCTV or dashcam vision from Musgrave Street near High Street between 2am and 4am, to come forward.
