This One Rule Could Solve Your Next Monopoly Argument
In 2020 we were all in isolation and rediscovering our love for the greatest board games of all time. I mean there wasn't all that much to do when you can't leave the house and have watched all that Netflix has to offer twice.
So that brings us to 2021, a year where we are setting the record straight on a number of rules in board games that people either play wrong or just plainly make something up to keep the game running.
Monopoly is a game plagued by household disagreements and has been the cause of more than one board throwing tantrum over the years. So let's take one of the biggest causes of those scenarios and draw a line in the sand of decency.
How does the auction system work?
To break it down, let's hand it over to YouTuber Alexandra Bulac who describes it perfectly.
In fact, in the rule book it states:
BUYING PROPERTY: Whenever you land on an unowned property you may buy that property from the Bank at its printed price. You receive the Title Deed card showing ownership; place it face up in front of you.
If you do not wish to buy the property, the Banker sells it at auction to the highest bidder. The buyer pays the Bank the amount of the bid in cash and receives the Title Deed card for that property. Any player, including the one who declined the option to buy it at the printed price, may bid. Bidding may start at any price.
This changes the way you play now and forever.
No more do I have to sit out after declining, I can come in with a lower bid and get the house for a steal.
No more do we just move on with the game and the next person to land on that space can buy it.
No more does a game need to take 4 billion hours to complete, as this rule will speed up the purchase process significantly.
No more arguments in the house about Monopoly.. oh wait.. let's not get crazy. At least this clears up one rule.
