Legendary Guitarist Eddie Van Halen Dies, Aged 65


Rock Legend, guitarist and founding member of Van Halen, Eddie Van Halen has passed away, aged 65.

Eddie’s son Wolfgang Van Halen confirmed the news of his father’s passing on social media earlier this morning. 

Wolfgang posted a black and white tribute photograph on Instagram with the accompanying words.

"I can't believe I'm having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning."

"He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I've shared with him on and off stage was a gift. My heart is broken and I don't think I'll ever fully recover from this loss."

"I love you so much, pop," Wolfgang wrote.

Eddie had been receiving treatment for cancer, according to PEOPLE he was initially treated for tongue cancer in 2000 and two years later was declared cancer-free. 

However, the cancer returned over the years with David Lee Roth telling PEOPLE that his former bandmate had been battling with throat cancer since 2015. 

Sources close to Eddie told TMZ that in the last 72 hours, his health had gone downhill, with the cancer having moved to his brain and other organs.

Eddie Van Halen was born in Amsterdam on January 26 1955. He and brother Alex were the founding members of the iconic rock band Van Halen.
