Lost car sparks missing children search

Police launched a massive search for three young children believed to be inside a car stolen in western Sydney before discovering their mother had simply forgotten where she'd parked.

A so-called amber alert was issued at 2.40pm on Wednesday following reports a man had stolen the car while the three girls - aged eight, seven and two - were sitting on the back seat.

But at 3pm police confirmed the children had been found safe and well.

A source says the children were reported missing after their mother couldn't find her car near the intersection of Denison and Studley streets in the suburb of Carramar.

"About 3pm the children were located nearby in Bennett Street," NSW Police said in a statement.

"The children were assessed by NSW Ambulance paramedics and released into the care of relatives."
