CQUniversity Visual Arts alumnus Kirra-Lea Caynes has taken out the major ‘Jeweller of the Year’ prize in the 2019 JAA Australasian Jewellery Awards.

Not only did she win the overall prize, she also won the ‘Colour’ category.

Kirra-Lea, formerly of the Sunshine Coast, studied Visual Arts at the then Central Queensland Institute of TAFE in 2007 and she spoke highly of the training she received.

“I was so surprised to win the overall prize,” she said.

“I am a direct result of the teaching by Lisa Gaze.

“I am so very glad she has been part of my life’s journey – everything in my life now is because I took her class back in 2007.”

JAA Director Karen Lindley said the standard of the awards was “unbelievable” and “world-class”.

“Kirra-Lea Caynes, now that she’s been recognised and her talents have been recognised by the JAA, I believe that she can go directly to the world stage and showcase her talent and all Australian designers,” she said.
