Teen Charged Over Cobraball Bushfire

 

A youth has been accused of deliberately lighting the Cobraball bushfire.

Emergency alerts were issued last weekend, with authorities urging residents to 'seek shelter' when the fire raged out of control.

The fire started around 1.30PM on Saturday and razed 14 homes.

Police confirmed in a statement on Thursday, "A teenager will be dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act following the investigation of a fire near Yeppoon".  

Police have spoken with the 16-year-old male and he will be dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act.

At this time of heightened danger and following the declaration of a State of Fire Emergency, the community is asked to work with authorities to prevent fires.

Parents and carers are urged to speak to their children about the consequences of lighting fires in this time of heightened danger.

Leave now warnings are in place for residents of Walkers Point Road at Woodgate, Noosa North Shore, and Black Snake near Gympie.

About 400 people were evacuated from Buxton, south of Bundaberg, yesterday.

Thirty people spent the night in an evacuation centre, but a warning for that area was downgraded this morning.
