New Containers For Change Depot At Boyne Island

Boyne Island residents will benefit from a new container refund point where residents from surrounding areas can return their eligible drink containers from Wednesday.

The depot at 1 Enterprise Street is being provided by operator, LOT Recycling, which is run by locals Brian Burtenshaw and Lorraine Tomney.

Brian said they felt there was a need in the area and they were motivated by wanting to be part of a
bigger scheme and working for a good cause.

“When you go down to Tannum Sands you can see the beach is really clean and we want to keep that way by helping the local community,” Brian said.

“I tell the guys who work for me it’s important they take possession of this – to be proud of what they’re doing and what they’re creating for the next generation.”

Ken Noye, CEO of Container Exchange – the not-for-profit organisation which runs the scheme – said it’s good to see more services opening as the Containers for Change network continues to expand.

“When the scheme launched, we had more than 230 container refund points throughout the state.

That’s grown to around 270, and we expect to have more than 300 by the end of the year,” he said.

Residents in the Boyne Island area are encouraged to take their eligible containers into the depot to meet the team and cash in their eligible containers for 10 cents each from Tuesday to Friday from 9.00am to 5.00pm and Saturday 9.00am to 2.00pm.

If you’re not sure whether your containers are eligible, go to the Containers for Change website (, click on ‘How it works’ and scroll down to enter the barcodes.

To check on which container refund point is closest to you, go to the website, select ‘Where can I return’ and enter your location in the search bar. Then click on the location tag on the map to see each site’s address and the information you need.
