Some of the best surf conditions the Capricorn Coast has seen have been enjoyed by many, thanks to Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

The threat of the cyclone has now passed our region, but not before creating some rare swell to the delight of local surfers.

Among them was Mayor Adam Belot who suffered a dislocated shoulder while surfing.

He says despite his injury it was fantastic to see the community enjoying the waves.

“Most of the beaches on the Capricorn Coast were absolutely pumping,” Mayor Belot said.

“There were hundreds of surfers out and it was great to see so many keen surfers out enjoying what was some high quality waves.”

While Livingstone Shire was fortunate to avoid significant impacts, it looks likely that communities across South-East Queensland will receive the brunt of the cyclone’s severe weather.

The Local Disaster Management Group has officially moved to Stand Down in response to Severe Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

Council will now focus on assessing and addressing localised impacts caused by large swells and ocean conditions.

“We know Great Keppel Island has experienced some significant erosion, and the Emu Park revetment wall has also sustained some deterioration,” Mayor Belot said.

“We will be holding further meetings with key stakeholders to discuss how we can move forward and identify any potential support or funding opportunities to assist with ongoing recovery efforts.”

Residents are reminded to stay vigilant and remain prepared as cyclone season continues.
